Nordaustlandet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nordaustlandet (sometimes translated as North East Land) is the second largest island of Svalbard, with an area of 14,600 km².
Much of Nordaustlandet lies under large ice caps, Austfonna (Europe's largest glacier), Vestfonna and Sørfonna, the remaining parts of the north being tundra inhabited by reindeer and walruses.
Austfonna is the third biggest inland glacier in the world (after Antarctica and Greenland), being up to 560 metres thick and 200 km in circumference.

The concentration of large granitic clasts in the easternmost known tillite outcrops suggests derivation from the east and/or south.
The clasts studied are not similar to granites known elsewhere on Nordaustlandet.
The petrology, petrochemistry and ages of the granitoid clasts from the Aldousbreen tillite locality lead to the conclusion they were derived from a source terrane, or terranes, as yet unknown in the west and northern Nordaustlandet.

 Our Furthest North
That evening, running before a near gale, we reached Murchison Fjord on Nordaustlandet at the north entrance to Hinlopen where the bleak surroundings, seen through scudding fog and rain as we anchored, brought home our isolation.
We spent the next week exploring Hinlopen, including finding several uncharted anchorages, south to Barentsøya where we transited Heleysundet with its fearsome reputation for strong currents approaching 10 knots that have sucked sailing ships to their doom: crushed in the ice that crashes back and forth through the channel for most of the year.
In the end it transpired that we reached our farthest north of this cruise, or probably any other for that matter, at 80 Degrees 35 Minutes North, just south of Parryøya, named after a British explorer who was there on one of the early attempts to reach the North Pole.
