Nordhausen is a Kreis (district) in the north of Thuringia, Germany.
Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Wernigerode, Quedlinburg and Sangerhausen in Saxony-Anhalt, the district Kyffhäuserkreis, Eichsfeld in Thuringia and the district Osterode in Lower Saxony.
The checkered red-silver part of the coat of arms is derived from the coat of arms of the County Hohenstein, the historical territory the district belonged to.

Situated between the Kyffhäuser hills and the Harz mountains, on the fertile lowlands known as Goldene Aue or Golden Meadows, Nordhausen is the political, economic and cultural centre of the district of Nordhausen in the north of the new federal state Thuringia.
In retaliation, Nordhausen was the target of massive air raids by allied bombers on April 3 and 4, 1945.

It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, the city of Suhl, the districts of Ilm-Kreis, Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and Sonneberg, and the state of Bavaria (districts of Coburg, Haßberge and Rhön-Grabfeld).
Despite its tiny territory this was an autonomous duchy from 1680 to 1826; in 1684 the capital was moved from Heldburg to Hildburghausen, and the mini state became known as Saxe-Hildburghausen.
The district is located roughly half way between the mountain chains of the Rhön and the Thuringian Forest.

The city name Nordhausen is sometimes incorrectly used when referring to the nearby WW II concentration camp of Mittelbau-Dora.
This concentration camp, which included the Mittelwerk underground city in the Kohnstein mountain (production site of the V-2 rockets), was indeed close to the city of Nordhausen, but the names Dora or Mittelbau-Dora are more accurate designations for the said concentration camp (now a memorial site).

The V-2 project (code name "E.W.," for Elektromechanische Werke) was pushed with all the secrecy and urgency which surrounded the U.S. "Manhattan District." The rockets were developed and tested at Peenemünde on the Baltic, and manufactured in a vast underground factory at Nordhausen, east of Kassel.
Colonel Holger N. Toftoy, of Army Ordnance, grabbed the rocket men, took them to the U.S. one, got permission to send most of them to the U.S. Meanwhile, another Ordnance team commanded by tall, cheery Major James P. Hamill, 27, was vacuum-cleaning the V-2 factory.
