Arne Nordheim -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Nordheim has received numerous prizes for his compositions, and was elected honorary member of the International Society for Contemporary Music in 1997.
Nordheim's spatial concerns, coupled with his focus on death and human suffering, are brought together in what is arguably his most famous work, Epitaffio per orchestra e nastro magnetico (1963).
Originally conceived for orchestra and chorus, Nordheim realised that his wish to have the whole performance space 'singing' was better achieved with the use of electronic means.

 Nordheim biography
Nordheim's musical journey through the past and present is related to his awe for human existence.
Nordheim had his breakthrough as a composer with the song cycle Aftonland (Evening Land) in 1956, and in the course of a few years he had written Canzona (1960) and Epitaffio (1963), works that attracted attention far beyond the borders of his own country.
Now, on the threshold of the new millennium, may the celebration of Nordheim's 70th birthday give music institutions an incentive to look back on the exciting fifty years that have passed not only in his work as a composer, but in the musical life of the nation, which he was instrumental in shaping.

Arne Nordheim: Dodeka: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Nordheim once based a work around the image of a solitaire diamond, and here, too, his compositions shimmer like stones of unmeasured preciousness.
Nordheim's brief liner notes talk about them more than anything in sentimental terms, describing them as "too resonant to forget." The album documents a key part of his career, but Dodeka is also deeply engrossing for its obsessive refinement, and its subtle emotional depth.
Nordheim has characterized it as a "yearning," and in these works he distills that feeling, without object or nostalgia, into an incredible purity.
