The Nordic combined is a winter sport in which athletes compete in both cross-country skiing and ski jumping.
While Norwegian soldiers are known to have been competing in nordic skiing since the 18th century, the first major competition in nordic combined was held in 1892 in Oslo at the first Holmenkollen Ski Festival, an event still held annually.
In Norway, popularity of the Holmenkollrenn, and Nordic combined in general, was great, and in fact separate ski jumping events weren't held at Holmenkollen until 1933.

According to nbcolympics.com, Nordic Combined (as well as doubles luge) are not limited to men only--either men or women may compete, but no women ever have.

A thought about NBC’s coverage of the Nordic Combined event, while it’s still burned onto my brain: I think it is safe to say that we, as a nation, are as well-versed in our cross-country skiing/ski jumping competitions as we probably should be.
Anyhow, the Nordic Combined stats seem to display the name of the competitor, the country, their time, and how far they are behind the leader in the cross-country skiing portion of the event.
Now, I know about as much about stock car racing as I do Nordic Combined — and yet, when I flip by Fox during the occasional motor race, I don’t need to break out a protractor and a mechanical pencil to figure which hillbilly is leading the rest of the pack.

In his 13th season on the U.S. Ski Team, he says this will be his last, that it’s time for other pursuits...including fatherhood (he and wife Sunny are expecting a girl Jan. 1).
You could be going out as only the second American combiner to compete in four Olympics.
