The 1932 Olympic Arena, Whiteface Mountain (alpine skiing), Mt. Van Hoevenberg (Nordic skiing and bobsledding) and the speed-skating oval were refurbished to accommodate a modern Olympics.
The 77-year-old Lake Placid native son was part of four Olympic ski-jumping teams (1948, 1952, 1956 and 1960), flew bombers in World War II, owns the Lake Placid motel that bears his name and called ski jumping for CBS and ABC from 1960 until 1992.
From a sports standpoint, the Games brought important new construction: the Olympic Center, luge run and 90-meter ski jump were built for the Games.
