The mission of the Norfolk Airport Authority is to manage the operation, maintenance, development, and marketing of Norfolk International Airport to serve the air transportation needs of southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina.
In 1950, responsibility for the airport was turned over to the newly established Norfolk Port and Industrial Authority (NPIA) which could proudly call Norfolk Municipal Airport one of the finest in the nation and one of the busiest.
As a result, in 1968, the Airport was officially recognized as the air transportation center for the entire Hampton Roads region, and became known as Norfolk Regional Airport.

The Hampton Roads-Norfolk Airport Task Force is a private sector initiative whose mission is to assist the Norfolk Airport Authority in enhancing commercial air service for Hampton Roads.
It is modeled after the Washington Airport Task Force, a similar initiative in the Washington, D.C. area that has successfully advanced the quality and scope of air service at both Dulles and Washington National airports.
Activities undertaken by the Task Force to date include assisting the Airport Authority in documenting both the level and mode of travel between Hampton Roads and the Washington metro area as part of an ongoing effort to decrease fares and increase service between Hampton Roads and Washington National Airport.

There was a dramatic drop in passenger traffic through Norfolk International Airport in 1995, but that was from an abnormal high in 1994, as staff writer Christopher Dinsmore explained in his reports Saturday.
The proposed plan projects significant improvements to the airport: among them, an arrivals building, a third passenger concourse, a runway parallel to the 9,000-foot-long main runway, additional curbside parking and new cargo and general-aviation facilities.
