Fitch upgrades Norfolk Southern debt - Boston.com
CHICAGO --Fitch Ratings on Friday upgraded the debt ratings on Norfolk Southern Corp., citing the railroad's industry-leading operating ratio, strong margins, debt reduction efforts and liquidity.
Fitch also said Norfolk Southern's margins have produced robust levels of operating cash flow and free cash flow, which provides the company with significant financial flexibility.
Fitch noted that Norfolk Southern's exposure to the automotive industry could affect the company if the economy slowed further, but its greater exposure to freight not directly tied to U.S. economy -- such as coal, agricultural and intermodal containers -- would likely offset that weakness.
