Normal (behavior) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In behavior, normal means not deviating very much from the average.
Examples of "normality" are mainstream, temperance, vanilla sex, equilibrium, stability, reality, peace, health, middle way; contrast these with eccentricity, perversion, paraphilia, intersexual, disease, disability, mental illness, addiction, war, crime, fantasy, dream, hallucination, illusion.
Some terms could fit in both lists, for example boredom: too much "normality" can be boring, but boredom is a kind of suffering, which can be considered "not normal".

Children also often resort to negative behavior such as regressing or being very disobedient in order to communicate feelings that they otherwise cannot express, or in response to the belief that their feelings are not being acknowledged by their parents.
In addition, "normal" behavior is in part determined by the context in which it occurs - that is, by the particular situation and time, as well as by the child's own particular family values and expectations, and cultural and social background.
Other behavior is considered a problem when parents feel that people are judging them for their child's behavior; this leads to an inconsistent response from the parents, who may tolerate behavior at home that they are embarrassed by in public.

Behavior that is considered acceptable and normal in one society or community is considered unacceptable and abnormal in another.
Behaviors that are acceptable to society as a whole are called social norms In contemporary American society, it is generally acceptable to live in families composed of two parents and their children, to send the children to school rather than to work, and to depend more on the husband than the wife for family income.
Normal behavior is defined, for the most part, in terms of the society in which the person lives.

Decide that the behavior is not a problem because it's appropriate to the child's age and stage of development.
When the unacceptable behavior occurs, tell the child the behavior is unacceptable and give a warning that you will put him or her in time-out if the behavior doesn't stop.
The biggest drawback to this method is that although the punishment stops the bad behavior for a while, it doesn't teach your child to change his or her behavior.

Normal play behavior can result in destruction, as it may involve digging, chewing, shredding and/or shaking toy-like objects.
Dogs who don't receive a lot of attention and reinforcement for appropriate behavior may engage in destructive behavior when their owners are present as a way to attract attention - even if the attention is "negative," such as a verbal scolding.
Your dog's destructive behavior may be caused by fear if the destruction occurs when he's exposed to loud noises, such as thunderstorms, firecrackers or construction sounds, and if the primary damage is to doors, doorframes, window coverings, screens or walls.

 Perturbing Normal Functioning
In cases in which continua are hypothesized between normal functioning and a disorder, the transition from a model of nondisordered to disordered processes may be a matter of changing a single parameter in a connectionist network.
Because connectionist models of normal functioning strive to preserve biological congruity, neurological processes thought to cause a psychopathology, such as lesions or neurotransmitter imbalances, may often be modeled by altering some aspect of a connectionist network.
Other researchers explicitly model normal behavior in the course of their research on a psychopathology, thus extending current understanding of both normal and psychopathological behavior.

Although it's perfectly normal for a puppy to chew on furniture, shoes, shrubbery and such, these behaviors can be a problem for you.
Because puppies are highly motivated to exhibit this type of behavior, attempts to suppress it or stop it are unlikely to be successful unless you give your puppy an alternative behavior.
The goals of working with this normal puppy behavior are to redirect your puppy's desire to put something in her mouth onto acceptable chew toys and to teach her to be gentle when a hand is in her mouth.

HarperCollins College Outline Abnormal Psychology by Timothy W. Costello from HarperCollins Publishers
The average person is vaguely aware of the problem, perhaps has experienced a mentally ill person in his or her family; but, for the most part, holds opinions about abnormal behavior that are based on bits of information or erroneous reports.
Common misconceptions about abnormal behavior are that it is incurable or inherited; that the mentally ill are dangerous; that abnormal behavior is always bizarre; that mental illness comes from weakness of will or immoral behavior.
Abnormal Psychology is that branch of psychology that concerns itself with establishing criteria to distinguish abnormal from normal behavior; describing the various types of abnormal behavior; searching out the causes of abnormal behavior, seeking means of treating it, and finally, with finding ways to prevent it.
