Saline (medicine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In medicine, saline is a solution of sodium chloride in sterile water, used commonly for intravenous infusion, rinsing contact lenses, and nasal irrigation or jala neti.
Normal saline is typically the first fluid used when dehydration is severe enough to threaten the adequacy of blood circulation and is the safest fluid to give quickly in large volumes.
Dextrose (glucose) 4% in 0.18% saline is used sometimes for maintenance replacement.

Re: Is there a DIFFERENCE between a molal and a normal solution?
A 1 normal solution of hydrochloric acid is exactly the same as a 1 molar solution of hydrochloric acid, but a 1 normal solution of sulfuric acid is the same as a 0.5 molar solution of sulfuric acid (because the 'valency' of sulfuric acid is 2).
The problem with normality as a measure of concentration was that the normality of the same solution could vary depending on the context of what you wanted to do with it.
If the reference is to sodium chloride as 'normal saline' in a medical context, it means 155 millimolar; if, on the other hand it is a very old-fashioned chemical reference, then it means 1 molar, because the 'valency' of sodium chloride in any context is 1.

Normal saline eye wash solution, Eastern Carolina
Normal saline solution is ordinary table salt mixed with water in a strength that is similar to tears.
Normal saline solution can also be made by combining 2 cups(473.18 mL) of clean tap water and 0.5 tsp() (2.5 g()) to.67 tsp() (3.35 g()) of salt (without iodine).
However, nasal spray solutions that contain normal saline should not be used in the eyes because they may contain preservatives and other ingredients that could be harmful to the eyes.

The blood pressure in the superficial veins is usually low, but if it rises and remains at a higher level over a period of time, the valves in the veins begin to fail and the veins dilate, or expand.
The liquid sclerosing agents that are used most often to treat spider veins are polidocanol (aethoxysklerol), sodium tetradecyl sulfate, and saline solution at 11.7% concentration.
Normal results of sclerotherapy include improvement in the external appearance of the legs and relief of aching or cramping sensations associated with spider veins.

Hypertonic saline is usually reserved for severe hyponatremia (sodium < 115 meq/L).
In severe cases, the maximum sodium increase within the first 24 hours should not exceed 10 to 12 meq/liter in order to reduce the risk of CNS lesions and/or pulmonary edema.
Alternatively, in mild to moderate hyponatremia (serum sodium: 125-134 meq/L), a normal saline infusion is preferred.
