Cohn shows how the fiction of a Jewish conspiracy then combined with volkisch-racist ideology to produce the Holocaust: civilization needed to be rescued from this dark, earthbound race by the "world of good, of light, incarnated in blond, blue-eyed people" marching under the sun-god's symbol, the swastika.
Norman Cohn's book is populated with obscure, half-crazy, half-criminal political adventurers who used this ridiculous fake as a device for obtaining influence, privilege and power.
Cohn's study of the creation and the effect of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion is enlightening, disturbing and at times maddening.

Norman Cohn, chairman, acting president and owner of the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI), just may be the luckiest man in the industry.
In a wide-ranging interview with both Cohn and his son Matthew Cohn, president of the ASI Show, what comes across first is the graciousness of the family, and that, coupled with the obvious business acumen displayed by both men, perhaps sheds a little light on why ASI has been so successful in leading the industry.
The Cohn family, who in the 1950s was in the grocery business in Iowa and also had a small distributorship, became a supplier of gifts through its Waterloo Ideas Co., and in the process became listed in ASI and the largest advertiser in the new ASI magazine, The Counselor.

 The flight of the witch
Ginzburg's concern is that scholars seem to have neglected the many incidences of flight that occur in folklore and shamanic culture throughout the world, in preference for the idea that it was an elaboration by elite mentalities during the witch trials of the early modern period.
Cohn, for example, says: "Yet before the great witch-hunt could begin, the idea of witchcraft had to undergo a further transformation: intellectuals had to persuade themselves that witches could fly."3 Ginzburg is particularly concerned about how, or why, this witch-flight originated in folklore and believes that the benandanti provide clues to this.
There is no doubt that Cohn's argument is valid, and that the creation of the stereotypes he describes occurred, however he seems to have neglected the kind of evidence that Boguet puts forward concerning "sleeping like the dead".

Norman Cohn, Pursuit of the Millennium
Norman Cohn's purpose in writing The Pursuit of the Millennium: Revolutionary messianism in medieval and Reformation Europe and its bearing on modern totalitarian movements, which was originally published in 1957 and then re-printed in 1961 in an expanded edition, was two-fold.
Cohn wrote it in part to expose and neutralize Marxist interpretations of the significance and nature of the movement of the Free Spirit.
Instead, Debord places his reversal of Cohn in the chapter entitled "Time and History," which seems to indicate that Debord is uncomfortable with the fact that he himself is (still) a Marxist; it indicates that Debord is uncomfortable with the validity of Cohn's attacks on Marxism.

While Norman has a clear affection for the group, his is a clear-eyed, bare-knuckled telling, and, as one writer put it, he constructs a "rigorous analysis of the pretensions and affectations of hippie culture" in the process.
In a certain way, he resembles a less zany Nik Cohn; they both emerged from Britain's post-war baby boom brimming with rock 'n' roll energy, and they both write with verve and wit about the music that captured their imaginations at an early age.
Unlike, Cohn, Norman focuses on almost exclusively on his subjects - not himself - and he rarely threatens to disintegrate into nonsense (which, with Cohn, is half the fun).

The case that The Protocols of Zion is genuine
Norman Cohn ridiculed the sentence in the Protocols about subway terrorism, but the recent gas attacks in the subways of Japan show that it is not as far-fetched as it seemed.
Cohn's other major book, Warrant For Genocide, a study of the Protocols, is polemic rather than scholarly, the author being Jewish and keen to ignore any counter-evidence in the Protocols, such as its apparent linkage to later major historical events in the Twentieth Century.
Cohn fails to even consider whether the Protocols might be seen as millenial literature - which it obviously is. The notion of an initial Paradise and a final Millennium (thousand-year empire) is Zoroastrian - the word "paradise" is Persian.
