		The son of Holocaust survivors, Finkelstein is known for his writings pertaining to the behaviour of the state of Israel, especially in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for his view that the Holocaust is being exploited for personal financial gain and pro-Israel political ends.
		Finkelstein wrote his doctoral thesis on Zionism, and it was through this work that he first attracted controversy.
		Finkelstein says that he relies on the work of Raul Hilberg for historical facts about the Holocaust, and on the basis of that research Finkelstein quotes the numbers of Holocaust Jewish victims killed as being 5.1 million [13].
