Bio: At the height of his career, Norman Granz was one of the most powerful nonmusicians in jazz.
Granz supervised the award-winning film short Jammin' the Blues (which featured Lester Young) and put on a concert at the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles that he dubbed Jazz at the Philharmonic.
Many of Granz's favorite artists had had erratic recording careers in the 1960s (including Ella, Basie, Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie) but the rise of Pablo resulted in their discographies being uplifted and greatly expanded.

At the height of his career, Norman Granz was one of the most powerful non-musicians in jazz.
He always fought for the music he believed in (having a love for freewheeling jam sessions), for his artists (who he accurately considered to be among the greatest in the world) and against racism, forcing many hotels and concert venues to become integrated in the 1940s and '50s.
Granz founded Clef (1946) and Norgran (1953), eventually consolidating his music when he founded Verve in 1956.

Critics (a breed for which Granz had only disdain) complained that much of this was crass, and with some justification, but Granz looked after his musicians in a fashion unprecedented in jazz, and audiences revelled in what he had to offer.
Granz deserves much of the credit for establishing Fitzgerald as a major star beyond the confines of the jazz audience with these recordings, and his astute management of her career ensured that she remained there.
Granz himself commented on his low public profile when he acknowledged that people "see the tall old man standing next to Ella Fitzgerald, and they don't know who he is," but if his public profile remained intentionally low, his contribution to jazz was huge.

Granz’ work in bringing jazz greater artistic recognition by presenting America’s modern classical music in the same environment that the music of great music masters of Western Civilization was presented, was an important mission in jazz history.
The recording quality of the CD is quite good considering the status of recording technology of the late 1940’s and that it is a live recording.

The year was 1949, and visionary producer and record-company owner Norman Granz had created the jazz at the Philharmonic concerts.
This was all on the cusp of the fifties renaissance of jazz that changed the face of music forever.
While this recording serves as an invaluable timepiece and reference point for the jazz genre you must remember that it was recorded in 1949 and the pristine sound you are accustomed to hearing from the Fantasy vaults will not be available on this CD.

Various Artists | The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions
The Jam Session music here conjurs up the Granz Jazz at the Philharmonic recordings as a basis of comparison, particularly since the Proper label has just issued a cheap version of the JATP recordings as a box that costs a sixth of the pricey Verve box of the series.
Both Granz projects reflect the producer's penchant for hysterical drama—though the studio-based jam sessions keep the hysterically repeating high notes under better wraps.
The evidence here is that Granz conceived as jazz as a sophisticated form of vaudevillian showmanship.
