  Norman Hudis
Hudis remained with Pinewood for 2 years, during which time he didn't manage to actually get anything on screen; this lack of success eventually drove him to go freelance, whereupon he soon became a prolific writer of B movies in the 1950s.
Hudis duly did so and the resulting film, Carry On Sergeant was an instant success both in the UK and farther afield.
Hudis worked on a further 5 Carry On films and in 1959 was greeted with the news that Carry On Nurse had been the top grossing film of the year.

The success of the film Carry On Sergeant as it was renamed (the only thing remaining after the re-write being the basic premise) lead on to Hudis writing five more for Rogers before he was lured to the United States where he worked as a freelance TV writer.
Hudis' Carry On scripts differ quite a bit from the later Talbot Rothwell scripts, with a more soft-centred approach.
As Hudis recalls, when he was stuck for gags, he only had to shout downstairs and ask her to recall a funny incident that she could remember.

 Dinner with Ribbentrop
Hudis, famed as the screenwriter of the six classic British "Carry On" film comedies, wrote "Dinner with Ribbentrop" in the early 1970s but has made continuous rewrites as recently as this year.
Just to ensure that we don't get too slanted a portrait, Hudis paints the actor as an equal-opportunity bigot whose dislike of Irish, fls and England's Labour Party is nearly as intense as his paranoia that Jews controlled everything from the economy to the worlds of theater and film.
Before Norman Hudis wrote the "Carry On" comedies and many television scripts, he was a publicist for J. Arthur Rank's famed Islington Studios.

The series initially ran for 13 episodes of 55 minute duration and was seen at 3.25pm on Sunday afternoons from September to December 1960.

Norman Hudis bases this romp on the Bull Boys by RF Delderfield, but changes the setting from a ballet school to a Army camp, using his experiences in youth for it's benefit.
A reasonable start to the series, and it was certainly successful, being one of the box-office pulls of the year, but for the person brought up on the later Carry Ons as I was, this is just from a tamer and older era of British comedies.

Taking time out from this crowded schedule Norman was only too happy to talk to Carry On-Line about his involvement with the series and to share his memories of those halcyon days of British comedy.
It has to be said that Norman is one of those people who you cannot help but like, with a friendly nature and an understated but sharp sense of humour.
Taking up the story Norman remembers that ‘both Peter and Gerry responded enthusiastically to my notion that we should follow a group of unwilling and incompetent conscripts, from induction and misery to team spirit and success - all because of belated affection for an irascible but basically quite lovable Sergeant.
