As a child, Norman Osborn had an abusive father, much as he was abusive to his own son Harry, and he, in turn, was to his own son, Normie.
Harry Osborn, Norman's son, had witnessed the final defeat of his father at the hands of Spider-man and removed his costume before the authorities could arrive, thus preserving his secret identity.
Sometime later, Norman Osborn was finally revealved to the public as the Green Goblin and after an climatic battle with Spider-Man and Luke Cage that raged across Manhattan, he was finally imprisoned.

Norman was also responsible for the most henious act in all of comics- he had a clone of Peter Parker created, and made him believe that for many years his life had been lead by a clone when it was really him all along.
Norman says that the death of his son (which Spider-Man was present for), his daughter-in-law being swamped with the company, the slanderous book by Ben Urich linking him to the Green Goblin, and the re-emergence of the Green Goblin have all lead to him wanting to restore honor to the Osborn name.
Osborn starts to tell Parker a little story about a man who gets a package that is seemingly empty yet after it is opened it melts the skin, muscles, organs, and bone down to their basic elements.

Norman would then wake up in the morgue, kill a man with the same physical characteristics and replace his body with that one.
Osborn would be infuriated at many things, such as the wedding of Peter and MJ, Harry failing to defeat Peter, the Hobgoblin stealing his own weapons, and many other things, but the thing that made him start his plan in full force was the death of his only son Harry.
Norman escapes, but he has the last laugh when he mentions how close he was to changing Spider-Man into The Green Goblin.
