 Norman Taurog
Chicago-born Norman Taurog was performing on stage from his early childhood, long before he began work as a child actor in movies.
Taurog was especially well liked by Elvis Presley (and, one presumes, his manager Colonel Tom Parker), and directed the former King of Rock 'N Roll in nine movies between 1960 and 1968, including Blue Hawaii, Spinout, and Live a Little, Love a Little.
Never a noted stylist in either comedy or drama, Taurog knew how to stage a scene for the strongest audience reaction, whether that entailed tears or laughter, and also how to do so quickly and economically, especially with child stars, neophyte performers, and non-actors.

Paired with the insincere sincerity of obnoxious Dean Martin and framed by the sincerely mediocre Norman Taurog, Lewis is the only aesthetic thing going on in the picture--you find yourself wondering why he didn't dissolve the useless partnership with Martin sooner than he did.
It would take a great ironic talent (like subsequent Lewis collaborator Frank Tashlin) to read something into this mess, but Taurog's direction is as ironic as a religious pamphlet and as eye-catching as a funeral procession.
Taurog's uptightness seals the doom of Lewis' image, ensuring that we laugh at him but resist the pull of his unknowing nonconformity.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Broadway Melody of 1940
The picture offers plenty of comedy (most of it plays somewhat flat), while vaudeville performers crop up from time to time, including a hazardous unicyclist, a demented operatic soprano, and a really impressive juggler.
But the singin' and the dancin' are what sells the tickets, and veteran studio director Norman Taurog never interferes, utilizing long takes with simple, sweeping motions that follow the principals in head-to-toe framing.
Like most Hollywood musicals from the Golden Age, Broadway Melody of 1940 wasn't about to win any awards for the acting or the screenwriting; thankfully, this entry is so entertaining that such elements become completely superfluous anyway.

While it is far from the worst movie ever made, its spoof of 1960's "hipsterdom" (as filtered through the lens of a way-over-40 director), James Bond and Roger Corman movies makes it a strange bird indeed.
Director Norman Taurog's decision to film this as if it were just another Jerry Lewis comedy makes a certain amount of sense when one considers that the humor in the script never rises to a higher level -- but it also makes the spoof elements of the film seem grafted on.
