Thagard resumed his academic studies in 1971, pursuing additional studies in electrical engineering, and a degree in medicine; prior to coming to NASA, he was interning in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Thagard was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978.
Thagard then flew on STS 51-B, the Spacelab-3 science mission, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on April 29, 1985, aboard the Challenger.

Norman E. Thagard served as a mission specialist aboard four Space Shuttle missions and was the first American to occupy Russia's Mir space station, conducting research for 115 days with Russian cosmonauts.
Thagard was born in 1943 in Marianna, Fla. He received bachelor and master of science degrees from Florida State University in 1965 and 1966, and earned a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1977.
Thagard's final shuttle flight was aboard Discovery, launched in January, 1992, with a crew of eight on an eight-day mission during which 55 major experiments were conducted in the Microgravity Laboratory-1 module berthed in the cargo bay.
