Karen L. Keele v. Normal Paul Wexler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
On June 13, 1995, Keele filed a class [*4] action complaint against Norman Wexler, Mitchell Wexler and Wexler and Wexler, on behalf of all Colorado residents who received debt collection letters like the ones she was sent on November 2 and December 1, 1994.
The district judge felt it unnecessary to decide whether a benefit to the Wexlers was tantamount to actual damage to Keele because the injuries she and the class members alleged were the receipt of the debt collection letters, not the payment of the $ 12.50 collection fee.
The Wexlers urge that neither the second nor third of these prerequisites, commonality and typicality, are met here because (once again) Keele did not pay the collection fee, whereas members of classes A and B took it upon themselves to remit the $ 12.50 payment.

 REELINSIDER.COM - SERPICO (1973)
In short, his Frank Serpico has all the necessary parts of a man with noble aspirations, common faults and a simple desire to do good works despite finding himself in a socio-cultural moment seemingly at odds with his everyman wishes.
Throughout the film's Oscar-nominated script by Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler, the action is peppered with topical references and realistic dialogue.
Though Serpico is the movie's centerpiece and purpose, all of its supporting characters are richly appointed with attitudes, costume and bias that only occasionally slip into caricatures of evil.

Chief among them is screenwriter Norman Wexler; a look at his life and ouevre is enlightning.
Despite what appears to be a truly dismal record in retrospect, Wexler was highly regarded in the 70s, even if he did threaten to assassinate Nixon and act like such an asshole that Andy Kaufman based his evil alter-ego Tony Clifton in part on Wexler.
Such a man, and such vapid subject matter (along with the infamous song "How Deep Is Your Love"), could only have achieved success in the 70s, and John Badham's direction neither elevates nor degrades the proceedings.

Peter Maas's biography of Serpico formed the basis of the script by Waldo Salt (MIDNIGHT COWBOY) and Norman Wexler (SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER), and Al Pacino is the title character, an honest cop who refuses to go on the take.
Surrounded by corruption, Frank Serpico is distrusted and harrassed by fellow officers, who suspect him both for his honesty and for his countercultural lifestyle.
But when all is said and done, Pacino is the riveting presence that makes the movie work and it is difficult to imagine any other actor in the part.
