Topic: Normlessness

Theoretical structure of adolescent alienation : a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. - Encyclopedia.com
Normlessness can be defined as a belief that socially disapproved behaviors may be used to achieve culturally defined goals.
Since the correlations between the latent constructs of normlessness and meaninglessness were substantial (r =.43 for boys and r =.38 for girls), we could expect that with a larger sample, the amount of shared variance would probably have led to a poorer fit of the overall model.
Normlessness and meaninglessness were moderately correlated but loosely related to alienation, which suggests that the role of these dimensions within our model may need to be reconsidered.

IIER 8(2): Oerlemans and Jenkins (1998) - There are aliens in our school
And normlessness pertains to an individual's unwillingness to abide by society norms, the loss of commonly held standards and the use of any means to achieve what is desirable (Seeman, 1959,1975).
Normlessness could also be described as having a purposelessness, that is the absence of any values that give purpose or direction to life, and may also include a conflict of norms, such as the conflict between the need to be cooperative and also be competitive (Dean, 1961).
Though the constructs of alienation are described as being distinct and separate, the boundaries are not fixed, and an adolescent may exhibit normlessness and powerlessness, yet still feel they belong to the school and are part of their peer group, that is, not suffer from social estrangement.

Most people experienced feelings of normlessness as they began to address the tasks of becoming involved in various aspects of their lives again.
I will also argue that the normlessness, or anomie, as Durkheim expressed it, experienced by family members is in fact a societal norm for dealing with survivors and could be seen as society's response to the breaking of the taboo.
This apparently insoluble problem is resolved by normlessness, where people are left in a position whereby there is little in the way of social norms governing the behaviour of self or others.

 anomie - Anarchopedia
Thus, the original meaning of anomie defined anything or anyone against or outside the "law", or a condition where the current laws were not applied resulting in a state of illegitimacy or lawlessness.
But, as used by Émile Durkheim and later theorists, anomie is a reaction against, or a retreat from, the regulatory social controls of society, and is a completely separate concept from a situation of anarchy which is an absence of effective rulers or leaders.
He believed that anomie is common when the surrounding society has undergone significant changes in its economic fortunes, whether for good or for worse and, more generally, when there is a significant discrepancy between the ideological theories and values commonly professed and what was actually achievable in everyday life.
