  ADW: Norops sagrei: Information
Norops sagrei is medium-sized, quite robust with a short and wide head, and is covered in small scales.
It is clear through some studies however, that male Norops sagrei spend more time displaying their dewlaps and bobbing their heads in tandem with other brown anoles than with anoles of other species, suggesting they feel the necessity to emit a higher degree of threat to their closest potential competitors.
For example, there are approximately 250 different species in the genus Norops and closely related genus Anolis, all of which display diverse morphologies and behaviors, in relation to the specific environment they live in.

2000 Progress Report - EDGE EFFECTS ON LIZARDS (NOROPS) AND FROGS (ELEUTHERODACTYLUS) IN TROPICAL FOREST FRAGMENTS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
But both species of Norops, as well as several frog species, appeared to become more abundant in the forest interiors after the onset of the wet season.
We also found that in Norops polylepis, the most abundant anole, rates of ectoparasitism were lower along edges than in forest interiors.
The magnitude of the edge effect on any species was neither influenced by the size of fragments, nor by the distance the interior plot was placed from the nearest edge.

Geographic variation in hemipenis morphology in Norops humilis (Peters), and the status of N.
Our latest work suggest that this is not the case, and that Norops originated in the Caribbean (perhaps on some part of Cuba) and later dispersed overwater to the mainland (and also to Jamaica).
This scenario not only bucks the prevailing paradigm, but also suggests that a single invading ancestor gave rise to the mainland anole radiation, which is roughly equal in size to the Caribbean radiation.

While I was a student on this course, I was amazed at the number of Norops lizards that co-occur in a given geographic region, many of which are highly territorial and use a dewlap display in courtship and territorial interactions.
I became interested in studying the role of dewlap extension in anole communication, in addition to a multitude of other fascinating topics (which I have not found time to study).

 Schlaepfer abstract
I estimated the survival of eggs and adults of a neotropical lizard, Norops polylepis, across pasture-to-forest gradients in the vicinity of Las Cruces, Costa Rica.
Each site spanned from 45m into the pasture (from the edge) to 150m into the forest and was sampled intensively three times at approximately 6-month intervals.
However, Norops polylepis eggs (n=56), obtained through captive breeding, developed 30-40% faster and were more likely to hatch (p=0.05) in the pasture than in the adjacent forests.

The fairly large size (3-3/4-inch, 7cm) flowers and twisted shape make this a worthwhile Masdevallia for intermediate to cool conditions.
