Regiments were the principle fighting unit in the Swedish Army from the time of Gustav II Adolph on to the Second World War.

The original provincial regiments (''landskapsregementen'') were raised by splitting the old Grand Regiments, forming 20 infantry (actually 21 as Smalandia Regiment was split into Kronoberg and Jönköping Regiments) and eight cavalry regiments as written in the Swedish constitution of 1634.

Norrbottens pansarbataljon (Norrbotten Armoured Battalion), also P 5, is a Swedish Army armoured battalion located in the province of Norrbotten, one of the few new formations raised in the 20th century.
In 1975 it was merged with Norrbottens regemente under the designation I 19/P 5 and ceased to exist as an independent unit even though it lived on as part of the regiment.
In 2001, the battalion was re-raised, this time as one of five battalions in Norrbottens regemente, retaining its old name, but not the designation P 5 (5th Armoured Regiment).
