Topic: Norsecore

  Encyclopedia: Norsecore
Norsecore, although originally a derogative term for blasting high-speed fl metal lacking of any real attitude and/or ideology, has become somewhat of a valid description for bands and has developed more of a stable definition amongst heavy metal fans.
Essentially norsecore (sometimes labeled as "fl" grindcore) is grindcore (minus the death and thrash influences) fused with fl metal vocals, imagery, and ideology.
The roots of norsecore can be traced to the 1994 release Transilvanian Hunger by the Norwegian band Darkthrone although some norsecore elements were present in A Blaze in the Northern Sky.

Essentially Norsecore (I sometimes use the term "Black" Grindcore) is Grindcore (take away the Death Metal influences) mixed with Black Metal vocals, imagery, and ideology.
Darkthrone's Transivalnian Hunger is regarded as the precursor to all Norsecore although one could trace the roots of Norsecore as far back as A Blaze in the Northern Sky.
Musically Norsecore is characterized by guitar riffs with the infinite repetition of 16th notes, pompous keyboard orchestrations (don’t be fooled!

Others maintain that Norsecore is the grindcore/fl metal hybrid genre (hence the name) championed by Marduk.
I think Norsecore is uber-generic fl metal in the style of the old Norwegian masters ala Darkthrone.
Norsecore is the hybrid bastard son of fl metal and grindcore.

Norsecore music the way it sounds, some of the music I listen to is probably that.
a problem that i see with the norsecore bit, though, is that many fl metal fans and artists would argue that darkthrone not only is fl metal, but helped to define the genre as it exists today.
I try to condition those who are new to the fl metal genre to be yourself, learn not to care what the leaches think, and listen to whatever fl metal bands you want to listen to.

"Norsecore" bands are something of the opposite of faggoth, they hold the same ideology as fl metal, but without being metal.
Essentially, norsecore bands set fl metal style lyrical content to a sort of trebly grindcore.
Dark Funeral and Marduk are the most widely known norsecore bands.

Norsecore is supposable bands such as Dark Funeral and Marduk.
I disliked those terms, because I believe they are made to make a negative picture of bands, and I feel those terms lack sensible definitions.
Hmmm, well I don't think youhave to worry, as i don't think the names are useda lot or bands are frequently termed those names...

It's not the rebirth I had hoped for Marduk, and the satanic-up-the-wazoo norsecore metal found inside leaves a feeling as though something was lacking.
If excellently produced norsecore is what one were looking for, I would suggest their attention be directed to Dark Funeral's latest, "Diabolis Interium." While it is not the most original album composed to date either, it offers more variety and memorable songs than "World Funeral."
This album could be worth picking up for a cheap price to go along with a stormy, apocalyptic day where demons are romping about door to door happily delivering vicious beatings with their Christian-Whacker(TM) sticks, but don't expect it to blow you away.

The only exception I can think of is that Agathocles invented the term "mincecore" and it has been used by other bands such as Rot (while IMO Rot sounds more like the Cripple Bastards, who don't use the term, than they sound like Agathocles).
Funeral Mist are the only band that I have heard ever described as Norsecore.
I find the entire "norsecore" article to be ridiculous: Marduk, Dark Funeral, Tsjuder, Funeral Mist, Gorgoroth, Limbonic Art, and especially Darkthrone are not "fl metal grind." Regardless, if it must remain, it should rest as its own article.

Okay, that's the griping done, but if you have no problem with OTT vocals in fl metal then you'll probably get a kick out of this.
Musically it's quite schizophrenic — sometimes there's a glaring similarity to hyperblasting “norsecore” outfits like Dark Funeral and Marduk, other times the pace slows down to much more relaxed crawl, and sometimes the riffs are bizarre technical mindfucks.
The latter sections are mostly played in a very clean, undistorted tone which allows them to be perfectly comprehended.

According to one guy's FAQ, norsecore is grindcore with a fl metal ideology.
According to another guy's FAQ, norsecore is not a real genre, but an derogative term used by BM nerds to describe BM (or untrue BM) bands that are seen as playing talentless noise.
I'd go for the theory that 'norsecore' is mostly used as derogatory term.

Anyways, if you're wondering which ones are good- Wrath of the Tyrant, the s/t EP, As the Shadows Rise (d/l it, it's rare), and In the Nightside Eclipse are excellent (although ITNE has the suckiest production ever).
Some people tend to dislike them for the keys etc. But as far as "norsecore" Emperor could never be counted in that group.

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Norsecore isn't an actual subgenre of music, its an insult used mainly by internet messageboard-going fl metallers to describe bands that allegedly play extremely derivative, artistically vapid, or otherwise worthless music usually cloned from the fl metal sound pioneered by the Norwegian innovators of the early 90s.
The insult is the equivalent of calling a certain style of instrumentally weak, effeminate power metal "Flower Metal." The “core” suffix is often used to imply that these bands are so far from proper fl metal that they’re more closely related to –core music.
In general, bands labeled as norsecore would be viewed as "untrue" fl metal bands (see the definition above.) Sweden's Marduk and Dark Funeral and Norway's Ancient are the three bands most widely considered to be norsecore.

Also out is long-time bassist B.War, replaced by former guitarist Devo Anderson, returning to the band after a 10-year absence.
Not that 'Plague Angel' represents a return to the flened Swedish death metal of old, this is the same violent norsecore they've been plying since 'Opus Nocturne'.
There's few surprises to be found, although "Deathmarch" is somewhat different — essentially a literal interpretation of it's title, being an ominous atmospheric track driven by militaristic marching beats.

Fans will still recognize the punishing "Puritanical Euphoric Mistanthropia" style guitar work and symphonic elements, but the keyboard has been bumped up alongside the axe-work to engineer a new identity for the band, a more clean cut sounding Aborym but still with heavy, modern Norsecore influence.
I'm gonna have to say that hate industrial meddling in metal or not, this is the best Tidfall has ever sounded and should serve to wedge them comfortably from its simple, mediocre Norwegian fl metal visage.

So to summarize, this album is NOT the same old "norsecore" that had blighted Marduk's albums.

As expected, the production of the album is biased towards the drumming.
However, unlike other Norsecore albums, the guitars are a bit higher in the mix and somewhat audible.
The vocals suffer the most from the production and are pushed the furthest back in the mix but given the vocalist's thoroughly unoriginal and unconvincing style, this is definitely a plus point.

The music is generally fast and cold, the roars and screams of the vocalist thrown into a vortex of hatred and bloodlust.

The overriding impression, though is one of far greater focus, and with this focus comes coldness, classically Nordic ice in big spike-adorned obsidian buckets.
The album is riddled with threads of dark melody that is quintessentially fl metal without devolving into the lazy, completely chord-orientated excuse for melody that an average Norsecore band would complacently serve up.
These are melodies that evoke and make visual suggestions, and that maintain patterns that are familiar and imbued with the elusive "old feeling" without being overly predictable, and without that basic dullness that characterises any band clinging to the back of Dark Funeral's tourbus as it rockets them to Wacken.
