Norstrilia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Norstrilia is the only novel published by Paul Linebarger under the pseudonym Cordwainer Smith, which he used for his science-fiction works (though several related short stories were once packaged together as a short novel The Quest of the Three Worlds).
The central character of Norstrilia is an inhabitant of a planet known as "Old North Australia", or simply "Norstrilia"; this is the only location in the Instrumentality of Mankind fictional universe (in which Cordwainer set many of his short stories) to produce the precious immortality drug "stroon", which indefinitely delays aging in humans.
Stroon (or the "Santaclara drug") is a substance harvested from the huge diseased sheep the Norstrilians raise, and which has the curious property of being resistant to all attempts at artificial synthesis by the most advanced science of the period.

Both Norstrilia and Void had meantime made a startling discovery that flew in the face of the expectations raised by the 1975 and 1977 workshops: that good novel-length SF was very thin on the ground.
Norstrilia went looking for a 1970 winner of a special award for unpublished manuscripts and Moon in the Ground by Keith Antill resulted, the first novel from an Australian SF small press.
Norstrilia had invested in an IBM electric composer, and this machine was able to provide enough outside work for Gillespie that he was able to live off the proceeds for some years (indeed, a lot of Void's composition work was done by Norstrilia).

Cordwainer Smith's Nortstrilia - A REVIEW   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Norstrilia is one of those books more heard of than seen.
Re-reading the entry on Norstrilia in David Pringle's book I notice that one of the details he gives about the story (the legality of the hero's computer) is wrong, and I tend to think that that his belief in Smith's originality is also wrong.
In the particular instance of Norstrilia, a young man on an off-world comes to manhood by becoming a millionaire and a prosthetic ESPer at the same time.

He lives on the planet Norstrilia [which used to be Old North Australia].
I think what I like best about Smith’s writing is that he keeps things exciting, all of his characters are full and interesting people, he has created a vibrant future world and he isn’t afraid to put the things closest to his heart into his stories [which is why there are cats freaking everywhere].

Norstrilia is part of a large future history covering tens of thousands of years, and many colourful characters.
The themes are a fusion of Smith's political opinions and his religious philosophy, and unfortunately, we'll never know exactly how it was all going to end because he died in 1966, with much of the story yet untold.
The circumstances of his life on Norstrilia lead to the purchase, and set him on his adventures.

As a full length novel Norstrilia is only marginally successful.
It's more a series of related short vignettes, that move along in jumps and starts (indeed two were previously published as short stories).
Norstrilia, like virtually all of Smith's fiction, is part of the "Instrumentality of Mankind" storyline, recounting important actions by characters who play key roles in the evolution of that fascinating tale of our future.

Part One was published in '64, and paints a delightfully barbed portrait of the kind of people who live in Northern Australia - the antecedents of the planet of Norstrilia.
This latter almost proves the undoing of the protagonist, Rod McBan the 151st, since he was born with a distinct genetic defect, being unable to communicate via telepathy the way everyone else does.
I may have enjoyed Norstrilia if I were ten years younger (ah, to be young again), but at my age it just doesn't stand up to it's peers from the same time.

The bizarre life on Earth, in contrast to the stoic life on Norstrilia, was a change too much for me to adapt to.

The people of this novel left their previous hell hole planet, Paradize IV, to come to the desert planet Norstrilia where they learned how to get the immortality drug stroon from huge sheep.

Rod McBan becomes the richest man in the universe through the economic warfare of his inherited computer; the novel largely concerns itself with the need to survive the acquisition of wealth.
Funny, poetic, and touching, "Norstrilia" is a bittersweet read, because it starts to show how Smith would have continued the expansion and collation of his future history, the Instrumentality of Mankind.
At least we have his stories, which is where any new reader should start (there's a new collection in print now); much of the emotional resonance of the novel comes from recognizing characters from the shorter works, especially the cat-girl C'mell.

NORSTRILIA by Cordwainer Smith - Science-Fiction & Fantasy forums
A few weeks back, I was fortunate enough to locate a second-hand copy of Cordwainer Smith's only full-length SF novel, Norstrilia.
Smith (the SF pen name of US foreign policy adviser Paul Linebarger) was one of the most unusual writers to ever grace the genre.
He grew up in China, and his knowledge of Chinese writing found expression in a number of unique literary devices, such as the masterfully ironic preface to Norstrilia that outlines the plot - and then adds that the details follow.

Linebarger does indicate in his prefaces and in his frivolous prelude to Norstrilia that his writing is, in part at least, for "fun".
Curiously, the story with the least narrative credibility is the one novel, Norstrilia, but it must be born in mind that Linebarger had not finished tinkering with it when he died.
Elms views Linebarger's writings as an exercise in psychotherapy (though he admits there was more to them than that), and he misses the point of the three pieces he discusses because he ignores the religious dimension.

The reported "Kittons" of Norstrilia are nothing more than the use of organic means to induce the disease in Earth-mutated sheep which produces a virus in its turn, refinable as the santaclara drug.
The term "Kittons" enjoyed a temporary vogue as a reference term both to the disease and to the destructibility of the disease in the event of external attack.
This is believed to have been connected with the career of Benjamin Hitton, one of the original pioneers of Norstrilia.

The current Onseck (ruler of Norstrilia) is a short-lived, stroon-allergic man, and a bitter enemy from a childhood Rod cannot remember.
Like the bare plot outline of Norstrilia, this random grab bag of terms hardly suggests the rich, fantastic complexity of Cordwainer Smith's millennia-spanning "Instrumentality of Mankind" future history.
However, Norstrilia is a vital work in the development of SF and an indispensable section of the Instrumentality of Mankind series, as well as a good novel.

Not that Dr Linebarger was ashamed of SF, far from it; he is even quoted as saying that science fiction has attracted more Ph.D's than any other literary genre.
The Smith reputation was built on a sold foundation of short stories, but during his time as a writer he did write one novel, and "Norstrilia" is it.
Originally published as two novellas (The Planet Buyer and the Underpeople) the story surrounds one Rod Mcban, a stroon farmer from Old North Australia or Nostrilia as it is known.

Cordwainer Smith Illustrated Bibliography by Mike Bennett
Norstrilia has a complex history of publication, ignoring the complex history of writing it also underwent.
In February 1975, the presumed original manuscript of "Norstrilia" was published as one.
Although it is stated in the NESFA Introduction that "Norstrilia", as first published, had been constructed from the two fragments, it seems unclear since the original printing never stated the source of the manuscript and the story flowed smoothly.
