		On 13 January 2004, the Autoridade de Saúde (local health authority, LHA) of Póvoa do Varzim in the north of Portugal was informed that several children and staff of a school had become ill with vomiting; diarrhoea was also reported in some patients.
		This was the first time that a norovirus outbreak in Portugal has been laboratory confirmed, and the timely intervention of the LHA allowed a thorough collection of data.
