North (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
North is a 1994 motion picture directed by Rob Reiner, and starring a formidable cast of Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Dan Aykroyd.
North received generally negative reviews, and flopped at the box office, earning about US$7 million for an estimated budget of US$40 million [1]; the film was a multiple nominee at the 1994 Golden Raspberry Awards.
Film critic Roger Ebert seemed especially baffled by North, noting that Wood and especially Reiner had both previously made much better films.

North's film career never took off, but she made a significant return to character roles, starting with Madigan (1968).
She secured a place in pop culture as Kramer's mother in the 1995 Seinfeld episode in which his first name was finally revealed, and appeared in Part 1 of the 1998 series finale.

Alex North, composer - from stage to screen
North's early film career was to maintain a link with the stage, with a number of screen adaptations including another by Tennessee Williams "The Rose Tatoo", and theatrical movies like "Les Miserables" and "Desiree" not to mention "Stage Struck".
Most film composers before North composed almost exclusively in a style not far removed from that of the late 19th century, the romantic period.
North's music however was quite clearly from the 20th century (in his use of modern harmonies and thematic intensities as well as the seemless inclusion of popular idioms like Jazz).

North wrote scores in New York for the Federal Theater project, worked as Martha Graham's rehearsal pianist—he wrote the 1937 dance American Lyric for her company—and did ballets for Hanya Holm, and most importantly, for Anna Sokolow, who left Graham to form her own company.
That groundbreaking film marked the first time that a jazz score was fully integrated into the onscreen drama, and North's success with this music has been credited with opening up film scoring to a new generation of composers.
North wrote more than 50 film scores, but despite 15 nominations for Oscars, he didn't return home with a statue until he won the Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1986.

Among the film's poetic images, which sparkle like gems, are the master calligrapher's jasmine- scented ink, a pomegranate inscribed with 60 Arabic names for love and a chess game between distant partners who communicate their moves by carrier pigeon.
The film's dreamlike aura is enhanced by the fact that it is not anchored in time, explains producer Hassen Daldoul, but occurs somewhere between the 9th and 15th centuries, during Islam's golden age.
The resonance in the United States of "Door's" vision was demonstrated by the overflow crowds attracted by the film in Washington, and its warm reception in Seattle was epitomized by a woman who told Benlyazid that it was the most beautiful film she had ever seen.

 North By Northwest (1959)
The box-office hit film is one of the most entertaining movies ever made and one of Hitchcock's most famous suspense/mystery stories in his entire career.
One of the film's posters advertised: "Only Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock ever gave you so much suspense in so many directions." The film paired debonair Cary Grant with director Hitchcock for the fourth and last time: their earlier collaborations were in Suspicion (1941), Notorious (1946), and To Catch a Thief (1955).
The title of the film is an anomaly and a clue to the absurd, confused plot in which no one is what he/she appears to be - there is no sharply delineated N by NW on a compass - it is an improbable direction.

Art film rejects this as unrealistic, and attempts to portray real life situations and characters where things happen that do not always have a clear meaning or purpose, but instead are vague and even mysterious.
Classical Hollywood films are also able to portray social issues, but only within the bounds of the narrative, and therefore social issues are looked at only from the outside, objectively.
But unlike classical Hollywood, art film is considered to be more effective at portraying its characters as more true to life, because their inner psychological state is portrayed with more subjective realism.
