As a result, the aircraft was seriously underpowered and dangerous to inexperienced pilots, and was quickly replaced by the North American "BT-9", which evolved into the famous "AT-6 Texan" trainer.
Unfortunately, USAAC regulations required that the engine of a trainer must be limited to 400 HP, and so the BT-8 was retro-fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-985-11 radial with the lower power rating.
The 850 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-9 radial engine was enclosed by a tight cowling.

The BT-9 is the USAAC operated version of the NA-16, a project financed by North American Aviation.
A total of 226 BT-9s were delivered to the USAAC, in three different blocks, A, B and C. Its tandem two seat cockpit made the plane an excellent training platform for instructors and student pilots.
It was immediately put into production as the BT-9, and the USAAC (US Army Air Corps) received its first plane in April 1936.

The T-6G Texan, a variant of the original BT-9, was equipped with steerable and retractable tail wheel landing gear, Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 Wasp engine, and square-tipped propeller.
The North American Texan was the most widely used military training airplane of all time, with more than 17,000 units produced.
The first prototype produced in 1935, given the designation of BT-9, was a monoplane with fixed tail wheel landing gear, thandem open cockpits and powered by a Wright R-975 Whirlwind engine.

The first NA-88 rolled out of North American's Dallas plant in April 1941 and in June (the same month that the USAAC became the US Army Air Force) an order was placed for 5,370 NA-88s as the AT-6C, 2,400 of which were to go to the US Navy as the SNJ-4.
A year after the BT-9 entered service, the USAAC issued Circular Proposal 37-220 calling for a combat training aircraft that could carry armament and equipment similar to that found in operational aircraft and also duplicate their handling characteristics.
The BT-9 entered USAAC service in 1936 and export orders soon followed.

 John Leland "Lee" Atwood
Atwood designed several successful aircraft for North American, including the BT-9, O-47, AT-6, and B-25.
Atwood later became president of North American Aviation and oversaw the development of some of the most important aircraft produced in the United States.
Atwood was elected to the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in 1984 and received the Howard Hughes Memorial Award in 1994.
