 | | Other teams followed, and by the end of the 1970's many of the best players in the world signed with NASL teams. Pele, Johan Cryuff, Johan Neeskens, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, Eusebio, and other legendary players were leaving the traditional club powers and heading for North America. |
 | | By the early 1980's, the league was clearly troubled, fighting openly with FIFA over rule changes, over-expansion, and attempting to move the game indoors during the winter. NASL commissioner Howard Samuels did a great job holding the league together, but his tragic death left a struggling league looking for leadership. |
 | | The league wouldn't survive that long. Near the end even a league champion resorted to charity to last another season, and not even the mighty Cosmos were capable of surviving. By the Spring of 1985, the NASL was officially over, leaving the US without a sanctioned first division until 1996. |
