I prepared this as a 'thought-piece' in the aftermath of the South Antrim by-election late in 2000.
North Antrim is so different in character from the Belfast constituencies that it is not proposed here to group them together.
If North Antrim were included in the Western rather than Eastern electoral unit, not only would there be an elegant 9:9 split of MP's between the two, but also the constituencies in and near Belfast would have been conveniently grouped together.

When the boundary changes created the new East Antrim seat, it had been widely anticipated that Paisley would contest the new seat, leaving Allister to campaign in what remained of the North Antrim constituency.
Although many traditional Paisleyite fundamentalists assume Paisley's son, Ian junior, will be his father's natural successor as North Antrim MP, many in the party's modernising wing see Allister as the man to not only hold the seat, but also win the DUP leadership.

Ulster Unionist North Antrim assembly member, Rev Dr Robert Coulter, has warned the constituency faces a diabetes crisis after the latest statistics released from a leading charity showed an increase of 650 people suffering from the illness.
