This spectacular castlecrowned crag on the famous north Antrim coast was shaped when the sea cut deep into the land, exploiting cracks on either side of the rock.
When Henry II was king of England, the Norman John de Courcy had overthrown the kings of the north of Ireland and established his rule from Carlingford Lough up the east coast as far as Fair Head.
In the early 17th century, Carrickfergus was the only place in the north where English was spoken; Gaelic was still the language of Ulster.

North Antrim is a Parliamentary Constituency in the House of Commons and also an Assembly constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
North Antrim currently has the largest electorate of any constituency in Northern Ireland and it is proposed to transfer the Glens, including Rathlin Island, in Moyle to East Antrim and rename that seat Antrim Coast and Glens.
North Antrim is an overwhelmingly unionist seat but the Westminster elections have been relatively uncompetitive, with one man repeatedly winning by a landslide.

 North Antrim Coast Road - The Glens of Antrim
The Antrim Coast Road runs between Ballycastle and Larne forming part of the main A2 coast road, it was built by William Bald between 1832 and 1842 to replace the Old Irish Highway which was both poor and dangerous.
Originally called the Grand Military Way it was built in light of strategic lessons learnt by government after the1798 rebellion and was intended to make not only accessibility to the Glens and coastal areas possible but also to create a quick access route for troops.
Corratavey Bridge which was built by William Bald in 1832 to carry the Coast Road over Corratavey Burn, now also forms an interesting feature to the forest drive - the road and burn combine as a ford to pass below the bridge.

The North Antrim Area Based Strategy was a European funded Rural Development programme, targeting the most disadvantaged area within North Antrim.

The oldest parts of the castle are the south wall and the two eastern towers, which date to the 14th century, when it was occupied by the MacQuillans, who controlled the Route and the north coast of Antrim.
They were granted the whole of the Glens and the Route, in effect the coast of Antrim from the River Bann to Larne.
The castle was abandoned by the Earls of Antrim in the aftermath of the 1641 Rising.

In the north east Tower, one of the two defensive Towers in the outer wall, lies the entrance to a concealed tunnel offering escape to the beach.

Is it any wonder, what with one of the most spectacular coastlines in Europe, it's enchanting lakes and it miles of well kept rivers, that a lot of Northern Irelands activity based holidays are water-based such as sailing on the British Isles biggest lake Lough Neagh or cruising on the 50 mile long Lough Erne.
These romantic ruins on a rocky crag on Antrim' Northern Coastline were once home to the powerful MacDonnell family who ruled much of this area in ancient times.
This is perhaps the lovliest of all the bays on the Antrim Coast

North Antrim Community Network (NACN) started in 1985 and was initially called the ‘Glens of Antrim Rural Community Development Association’ (GARCDA).
The Network then changed its name to the North Antrim Community Network (NACN) in the period 1996/97 to reflect the broader interests and a larger geographical area, as it expanded northwards and westwards to include the four Council areas of Moyle, Ballymoney, Ballymena and Larne.
The Network is managed by a Board of Directors that are elected from member organisations, a number of which have been heavily involved from the inception of the group and as a result have built up a vast amount of experience in the sector.

This island, which is situated off the northern coast of Antrim, nearly opposite to, the town of Ballycastle, in lat.
In 790, a body of Danish pirates, in their first descent upon the coast, laid waste the whole island and destroyed the monastery, which was soon afterwards restored.
The western side is rocky and mountainous and the appearance of the coast strikingly magnificent brown rocks and still darker masses of basaltic pillars are in some places contrasted with chalk cliffs; on the northern side the precipices towards the sea rise to the height of 450 feet without any projecting base.
