The North Atlantic right whale occurs in the Atlantic Ocean: during the summer from Davis Strait, Denmark Strait, and the Norwegian Sea south to Massachusetts and the Bay of Biscay; during the winter it ranges south to Florida and the Golfo de Cintra (23°N), Western Sahara.
In addition, because the North Atlantic right whale is dependent on coastal habitat, it may be more vulnerable to impacts from human activity, such as pollution, than many other cetaceans.
The North Atlantic right whale is usually found in temperate waters, although some move just north of the Arctic Circle or just south of the Tropic of Cancer.

The North Atlantic Oscillation is a major disturbance of the atmospheric circulation and climate of the North Atlantic-European region, linked to a waxing and waning of the dominant middle-latitude westerly wind flow during winter.
The North Atlantic Oscillation Index is based on the pressure difference between various stations to the north (Iceland) and south (Azores) of the middle latitude westerly flow.
When the North Atlantic Oscillation Index is positive, the westerly flow across the North Atlantic and western Europe is enhanced, along with the Iceland Low and the Azores High.

Statistics of North Atlantic Oscillation Decadal Variability
The statistical significance of the lag-correlation and spectrum of a timeseries of the wintertime strength of the North Atlantic Oscillation is examined.
The decadal variability of North Atlantic climate is currently a prominent topic of research, and dominated the discussion at the recent Atlantic Climate Change Program meeting at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in late September 1997.
The wintertime NAO index shows definite one-year lag-correlation, suggesting the atmosphere of the North Atlantic is in communication with a system posessing interannual memory (most likely the ocean.) However, spectral analysis of the timeseries shows it is consistent with a simple autoregressive AR(1) process.

Official Atlanticism spoke of the merits of the Atlantic Community and of incremental improvements in it; it expressed Atlanticist themes in the form of a celebration of the status quo and a rebuke of all the critics of the alliance, rather than a program for transformation.
