  The North Atlantic Drift Current
The N. Atlantic drift is the broad, northward flow of surface waters that replaces the sinking waters in the N. Atlantic polar seas.
Because of the rapid advection of the North Atlantic gyre, the temperature of the surface waters of the NADC almost always exceeds that of both surrounding waters and the overlying atmosphere (Rossby, 1996).
Several authors define the region that is occupied by the lethargic NADC as bounded by the cool Irminger current to its west, while its southern and eastern border is weakly constrained by the extension of the North Atlantic Current that bends northeastward, flanking the western edge of the Rockall Plateau.

 The North Atlantic Current
Other transport estimates for the NAC include 35 Sv (ref leval 1900 m) (Krause et al., 1987); In his figure 15 the Gulf Stream is located at 40°N 50°W and the Slope Water current at 41°N 50°W. Fuglister (1963) considered this to be a typical situation and found a westerly countercurrent separating the two.
Worthington had shown the NAC as part of a separate Northern gyre, however subsequent work later revealed that this hypothesis was incorrect and that the North Atlantic Current was indeed derived from the Gulf Stream.
The North Atlantic Current is generally thought of as the end of the Gulf Stream, however it goes on to feed some of the major subarctic currents completing the poleward transport of tropical waters.

The deep thermohaline circulation of the Atlantic involves flow of waters from the southern hemisphere into the North Atlantic, modification and convection of these waters in the North Atlantic and its adjacent seas, and outflow in a thick deep layer.
AAIW comes from the South Atlantic where nutrients are higher, and it so happens that it can be tracked through the Gulf Stream and on up into the subpolar North Atlantic through its silica, which is slightly higher than the North Atlantic silica.
In the North Atlantic, the components of NADW are formed at three sites, all involving intermediate depth convection: inside the Mediterranean Sea, in the Labrador Sea and in the Greenland Sea.

The NAC is the northward extension of the Gulf Stream: in its classical path it travels along the continental margin until Flemish Cap where it turns west int o the Northwest Corner (Krauss, 1986).
The NAC marks the northernmost exte nt of the subtropical gyre and separates the cold fresh water of the subpolar gyre from the warm saline subtropical water.
The major features of the NAC are see n in both the float-derived hydrography and the climatological mean: the shoaling (and cooling) to the west and north, the topographic control along the western boundary and the subpolar front as a more significant change in height than in temperature.

It is warmer in the North Atlantic because warm water is brought by the thermohaline circulation from the tropical and South Atlantic.
Increased rainfall and warming over the North Atlantic are both expected as a result of increased greenhouse gas concentrations, and so it can be argued that global warming may cause a rapid collapse of the thermohaline circulation.
The northern North Atlantic and NW Europe have annual temperatures that are about 9 degrees C above the average for their latitude, but this cannot all be attributed to the THC, since the wind driven ocean circulation helps to transport heat to these regions too.

The current, known as the sub polar gyre, has weakened in the past in connection with certain phases of a large-scale atmospheric pressure system known as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO).
While previous studies have proposed winds resulting from the NAO have influenced the subpolar gyre’s currents, this study found heat exchanges from the ocean to the atmosphere may be playing a bigger role in the weakening current.

Because of the Earth's rotation, the poleward flow in the western Atlantic is constrained to a narrow current on the western boundary of the ocean basin.
The current is commonly referred to as the Loop Current while it's in the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Current when it leaves the Gulf between Florida and Cuba.
The North Atlantic Current then feeds both the Norwegian Current which transports water northward along the west coast of Europe and the Canary Current which flows equatorward on the eastern side of the Atlantic.

Lew Rothstein are co-principal investigators of a combined observational and numerical investigation of the North Atlantic Current system in the Newfoundland Basin region of the North Atlantic.
