North Belfast is a Parliamentary Constituency in the House of Commons and also an Assembly constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
The seat is centred on the north section of Belfast, though at times the area around the Docks on the north side of the Lagan Estuary has instead been part of variously East Belfast and West Belfast.
North Belfast currently has one of the smallest electorates of any constituency in Northern Ireland and it is proposed to expand it further into Newtownabbey, taking in areas currently contained in both East Antrim and South Antrim.

North Belfast assembly member Gerry Kelly noted that the problems in the area were "like a replay" of the situation in north Belfast.

North Down must be grouped with Strangford because of its corner position - the alternative, grouping North Down with the Belfast constituencies and Strangford with South Down and Lagan Valley, looks rather peculiar.
The choice of whether or not North Down and Strangford are grouped with the four Belfast constituencies then pretty much determines the rest of the map.
North Antrim is so different in character from the Belfast constituencies that it is not proposed here to group them together.

Extrapolating from the local government elections is tricky because the North Belfast constituency breaches two local electoral area boundaries.
North Belfast had lost 15.90% of its electorate in the great electoral register shake-out, varying from 23.46% in the Ardoyne ward of Belfast to 9.86% in Cavehill ward, also in Belfast.
The UUP polled a mere 11% in a constituency which they represent at Westminster, and were lucky to beat the SDLP's Martin Morgan for the last seat, by 4,971 votes to 4,682.
