The waterway's broad shoulders at this end are the consequence of flows from its north and south branches, which in turn have been fed by scores of smaller streams originating in the New Jersey Highlands, finally joining at Bridgewater to form the Raritan's main stem.
Although the South Branch of the Raritan approaches Bridgewater from the direction for which it is named, it actually begins 51 miles (as the water flows) north and west when it emerges humbly from Budd Lake, the state's largest natural lake, a few hundred feet from busy Route 46 in Mt. Olive in Morris County.
The river is fine for fishing all the way from Long Valley through Califon, but the feeder streams that contribute through the gorge keep this portion of the water a little colder.

The river is the major geological feature of central New Jersey (one of the few geological features, actually; another is the glacial moraine that forms the Watchung mountains and extends eastward to form Long Island, Cape Cod, and Nantucket, but that's another story).

Edward Fitzgerald 7/5/2004: On 9 I found a great one in North Branch - the route is now 614 - as it goes over the North Branch of the Raritan River.
River in Clinton is the South Branch of the Raritan River.
(In fact, on I-78, both north and south branches are signed as "Raritan River", leading the motorist to believe that 78 crosses the same River twice.) Other bridges now on Route 173 have been pretty well obscured, especially the Musconetcong River bridge at Bloomsbury, which I would call "armor - plated".
