Brooksville was established in 1856, and grew and developed from a consolidation of these two communities, and was incorporated October 13, 1880.
The City of Brooksville, as we know it today, was settled by four pioneer families: the Howell family which settled the northern part of town; the Jon L. Mays family which settled the eastern part of town; the Hale family on the west; and the Parsons family on the south.
Brooksville was named in honor of Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina because of the role he played in a drama which took place in the legislative chamber of the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. State Right's statesman Representative Preston Brooks was a man with a strong sense of fair play.

Around 1840, Fort DeSoto was established in present-day Hernando County in the northeast edge of present-day Brooksville to protect settlers in the area from Native Americans.
In 1856, the citizens of the Hernando County chose to rename the town, their new County Seat, Brooksville in honor of South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks, who in the same year beat fierce abolitionist Masschusetts Senator Charles Sumner with a cane in the Senate chambers, winning the Congressman great renown in the South.
On January 2, 1887, the Florida State Legislature divided Hernando County into three independent counties: Pasco County to the south, Citrus County to the north, and Hernando County in the middle.
