In the 2004 survey, 51 percent said they favored “targeted tax relief and subsidies to attract corporations to particular areas of the state,” up from 42 percent in 2002 and 31 percent in 2000.

Susan Webb, professor of sociology at Coastal Carolina University, was recently elected to a two-year term as president of the National Council of State Sociological Associations (NCSSA).
The election took place at a NCSSA meeting held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA), Aug. 12-16, in Philadelphia.
NCSSA members are officers and representatives of state and area sociological associations throughout the United States.

North Carolina’s Supreme Court overruled a Wake County Superior Court decision and issued an opinion in the still-unresolved race for state Superintendent of Education, between Republican Bill Fletcher and Democrat June Atkinson.
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled North Carolina law invalidated provisional ballots cast outside of the precincts where voters live and state officials could not count those ballots as having been legally cast.
Election officials are also instructed by law and regulation to assist voters in casting legal ballots.

Raleigh, NC -- Republicans Steve Troxler and Les Merritt were poised to capture seats on the Council of State following a canvass Tuesday of vote totals in last week's election, a state official said.
Gary Bartlett, executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, said unofficial county tallies from the canvass show Troxler with enough votes to oust incumbent Democrat Britt Cobb from the agriculture commissioner's office and Merritt defeating incumbent Democratic auditor Ralph Campbell.
In statewide contests, a trailing candidate must be within 0.05 percent of the leader to demand a recount.
