 North Carolina Zoo Receives Environmental Grant, Upgraded Status
The North Carolina Zoo has received a $5,000 pollution-prevention grant from the N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources' Environmental Stewardship Initiative to design and construct a wetland picnic area at the zoo's North America parking lot.
The zoo's Horticulture Section has certified its environmental management system to ISO 14001, and one of the objectives of the zoo's EMS is to reduce runoff caused by surface-water contamination.
The grant will allow the zoo to address water contamination from the North America parking lot runoff by using the constructed wetland to filter the water before it enters a nearby lake that is used for irrigation at the zoo and has several picnic areas.

Asheboro, N.C.- An African elephant that arrived at the North Carolina Zoo last month from the Toledo Zoo in Toledo, Ohio, went on exhibit for the first time at the state zoo today.
Following a mandatory 30-day quarantine period and introduction to the zoo's other female elephant in their off-exhibit holding facilities, Rafiki, a 21-year-old female, entered the N.C. Zoo's 3.5-acre outdoor elephant exhibit for the first time around 10 a.m.
The zoo is currently in the planning stages for a $6 million dollar expansion of its elephant and rhinoceros exhibits and holding facilities that will double the size of each exhibit by 2006 and enable the zoo to house up to 12 animals of each species.

Both African lion cubs born July 17th at the North Carolina Zoo were determined to be females during their first physical exams conducted as they reached one month of age.
Barbara Wolfe, the zoo’s senior veterinarian, said determining the sex of large cats in the first few weeks of development is difficult, but Wolfe is confident they are females.
The mother is a five-year old female who arrived at the N.C. Zoo from the Sedgewick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, in November 2002.
