The park complex consists of 505,000 acres (2045 km²) of the Cascade Range in two separate sections, as well as the adjacent Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas which are managed together with the park.
Mount Shuksan, in the northwest corner of the park, is one of the most photographed mountains in the country and the second highest peak in the park (9,127 ft / 2,781 m).
Several national wilderness areas and British Columbia parkland also adjoin the National Park.

North Cascades National Park Service Complex contains the heart of this mountainous region in three park units which are all managed as one and include North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas.
The east side of the Cascade Mountains (such as Stehekin in Lake Chelan National Recreation Area) is drier and warmer in the summer than the west side (such as the portion of Ross Lake National Recreation Area along the North Cascades Highway).
East of Newhalem along the North Cascades Highway is the Gorge Overlook Trail, a portion of which is paved and fully accessible and the remainder of which is accessible at a challenge level or with assistance.

As it turns out, the vicinity of the North Cascades Highway which bisects the park is actually part of the Lake Ross National Recreation Area which is what I visited for two days.
The North Cascades is a remote area that was not even traversible by car until the North Cascades Highway was built in the 1970's.
While many of the peaks in the park are visible from the highway, the park is almost necessarily in the domain of backpackers.

Although sentiment for national park creation continued over time, the urgency of the situation was increased by threats to the resources in the area by improvements in logging and mining technologies in the 1950's and 1960's.
The national park units are quite unusual in that they contain no paved roads whatsoever; the park area itself is actually 93% wilderness, and the wilderness is less accessible than in almost any other national park.
From 1857 to 1859, Henry Custer surveyed the north Cascades and explored the area extensively; Henry Pierce finally breached the mountains in 1882.
