Some cave communities are highly dependent on cave crickets, which exit at night to scavenge on the surface; for example, different species of troglobitic beetles that prey on cricket eggs are found from Indiana to Alabama and Texas.
Although this species commonly is found in cave entrance areas, where it feeds on crickets, the mice already were permanent residents deep in the cave, as evidenced by females with embryos or nursing young.
The cave soil and fauna were brought in insulated containers to the mine and carefully placed in higher areas to avoid the minor flooding that sometimes occurs from seepage.

 THE PALEOLITHIC ARCHAEOLOGY OF WEASEL CAVE
North Ossetia is situated in the center of the Caucasian isthmus between the Caspian and the Black Seas.
Similar faunal patterns are observed in Kudaro Cave, South Ossetia, Georgia, where this pattern is associated with the boundary between the Acheulean and Mousterian, indirectly confirming the provisional chronology of Weasel Cave.
The preliminary evidence from Weasel cave also fits well with the results of studies by Shchlenskii (1974; Plisson 1988) of Mousterian assemblages from Monasekaja (Goubskaja), La Gouba, Nosovo I, and Erevan (in the Ukraine, northwestern Caucasus, and Armenia, respectively) which failed to detect any evidence of projectiles.

A further engraving has been noted in one of the caves in the Cheddar Gorge, and further investigations are being carried out to verify this.
However, for the vast majority of engravings, it is impossible to obtain any direct dating evidence, leaving stylistic comparisons and archaeological context the only means of reaching a conclusion on the possible age of any such markings.

The Southeastern Cave Conservancy, in cooperation with the Huntsville Grotto of the National Speleological Society, is proud to recognize Lonnie Carr, of Sparta, Tennessee, as the recipient of the third John Van Swearingen IV Stewardship Award.
The NSS pays a reward of $250 to $1,000 for information leading to the conviction of any person (or persons) convicted of vandalizing, damaging, or destroying caves, cave wildlife, cave gates, cave artifacts, etc. Many southeastern caves, including several owned by the SCCi, have suffered attacks by vandals.
The NSS and SCCi encourage all cavers to report vandals and acts of vandalism so that they can be prosecuted under state cave protection laws.
