 Feds reject Idaho plan to kill wolves - Boston.com
The Idaho agency said the federal decision means the plan will not be put into effect this winter, but research to gather supporting data will continue.
While the Idaho Conservation League backs removing federal protections from wolves in the state because their numbers have met recovery goals in Idaho's wolf management plan, spokesman Jonathan Oppenheimer said plans to remove specific wolves such as those in the Lolo still should be scientifically sound.
Since January, Idaho has had day-to-day management over central Idaho wolves -- including the Lolo pack -- that are considered "experimental, nonessential" and thus not fully protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking public comments on a proposal to remove up to 43 wolves in the Lolo elk management zone of the Clearwater Region.
The proposal is made under the revised 10(j) rule of the Endangered Species Act, which took effect in February 2005 and allows removal of wolves having an unacceptable effect on elk and deer populations.
Once public comments have been reviewed and incorporated, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission, during its next meeting the first week of March, will decide whether the proposal should be submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which also must approve the proposal.
