The figures which were released in response to a parliamentary question tabled by DUP MP Sammy Wilson showed that in North Down 13% or 2,800 children were living in poverty, when costs associated with housing are factored into the calculation, this figure rises to 20% of the child population of the area or 4,200 children.
Speaking today Councillor Weir said: “Once again the impression that exists surrounding North Down as an area of affluence and wealth has been shown to be a simplistic myth.
The shocking news that one child in five living in North Down is living below the poverty line demonstrates to us all that far from being a rich and well-off area, North Down is afflicted with enormous levels of social need and deprivation.

Good call - and a generous move from Bob.(Even if he did have no chance and was looking at electoral humiliation had he insisted on standing) This should give Lady Sylvia pause for thought - though if one believes her ST column, (Hat-tip Slugger!) she could not care less!!!
With the Alliance Party putting up David Alderdice, it strikes me that the North Down constituency will now see a battle royal - with Peter Weir in one corner and Her Ladyship in the other.
