Barbra Walton, the general manager of the Great North Air Ambulance, said the decision to ground the Pride of Cumbria had not been taken lightly and she hoped it would be back in service in the near future.
Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAA), which provides the helicopter, has lost over half its income – around £20,000 a month – that is generated in Cumbria.
The service, which costs up to £50,000 a month, has been hit by a dramatic fall in fund-raising since the South East Asian tsunami disaster and the Carlisle floods.

Great North Air Ambulance, which provides the service for Cumbria, has appointed five paramedics as full-time staff members who will joining helicopters that serve the North East and Cumbria.
Great North Air Ambulance Service, backed by the News and Star’s Sky Medics Appeal, has been able to make the appointments thanks to the continuing fundraising.
The charity does not receive government funding and relies fundraising for the £750,000 per aircraft required to keep the service flying.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was forced to ground the aircraft in Cumbria and another in Northumberland earlier this year.
The charity is now asking the people of the North East and especially Northumberland to give their full support to the efforts being made to restore a full service to them again.
