		One of North East England's newest landscape photographers, Mike McFarlane, is to exhibit at Newcastle's Biscuit Factory later this year.
		Having grown up in the North East, Mike has spent most of his working life elsewhere in the UK. A career change from mechanical engineering and a move back to North East England, allowed him to concentrate on his passion for the landscapes, architecture and shapes of the region through photography.
		And, keen to show off the beauty of North East England to others, he will be approaching major galleries outside the region to show his photography of the region to people across the UK.

		Little did I realise in the mid-1970s that I was to live in North East England longer than I would live anywhere else.
		When I moved to Durham in October1976, North East England was, in part, characterised by coal-mining (the Durham and Northumberland coalfields), steel-making (particularly at Consett and Middlesbrough), and ship-building (particularly on the rivers Tyne and Wear).
		However, the history of North East England stretches back to Roman times: Hadrian's Wall extends from Wallsend, bordering the North Sea, to Carlisle, bordering the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea.

		The North East of England sits on the original line of Hadrian's Wall and at the end of the ancient Roman Empire.
		It was one of the cradles of the industrial revolution, boasting major figures such as locomotive pioneer George Stephenson, the inventor of the steam turbine Charles Parsons and Joseph Swan who turned Mosley Street in Newcastle into the first street in the world to be lit by electricity.
