Laboratory confirmation of 24 cases of human infection with the A:H5N1 avian influenza virus have been reported in Vietnam since the end of December 2004, when a further upsurge in cases was reported after a lull in the Autumn of 2004 [1].
Outbreaks of avian influenza in poultry in south east Asia have occurred since December 2003.
Since the outbreak in humans began in January 2004, the total number of cases reported in Vietnam and Thailand is 69, of which 46 have been fatal (Table).
