It is fortunate to have benefited from the discovery of north sea oil and at its peak, in the mid 1980's the oil and gas industry employed as many as 54,000 people.
To the far north, however, in a peripheral part of a peripheral region, the decline of traditional industries, combined with a continued publicising of 'bad image', has caused the northern area to slip into a worryingly low state of well-being.

BSAC TRAVEL CLUB - North East Scotland
From Montrose in Angus through to the top of Scotland at Wick and Thurso, the north east of Scotland is mainly made up of a huge triangle of land which juts defiantly into the harsh North Sea.
Due to the relatively straight path of the east coast of Scotland it only perhaps represents the smallest percentage of the Scottish coastline and is a mixture of rocky headlands and long stretches of apricot coloured beaches together with several large towns near the sea.
At the eastern end of the north coast lays the Pentland Firth which is affected by very strong tidal streams - in fact the highest recorded at around 11- 14 knots however the islands and skerries of Stroma, Swona and the Pentland Skerries do have rewarding diving on them.

The area isn't really in the far north east of the country, which could be defined as the former county of Caithness, but centred on the city of Aberdeen, much further south.
And yet it is relatively unknown by those outside Scotland, apart from some areas in the Grampians and along Deeside.
But as with many parts of Scotland, the tourist traps (such as Deeside and Aberdeen) swarm with people, while other places, equally as interesting and picturesque, are bypassed.
