The University of Wales, which was founded by Royal Charter in 1893, is a large and distinctive Federal University currently comprising ten Member Institutions, whose activities it exists to support and which are closely involved in its governance.
Together, the member institutions of the University of Wales and its validated schemes of study result in a thriving student population of nearly 90,000 from all over the world.
This definition is that provided by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in UK with which the University is happy to work in order to assure the quality of the awards.

NEWI is an Associate College of the University of Wales, with delegated powers for the validation of all taught courses at diploma, degree and postgraduate levels, and delegated powers for the awarding of research degrees.
An emphasis on key skills, transferable skills, vocationalism and employability is prevalent in further and higher education, and notions of graduateness are emerging in higher education.
During the Higher Education Quality Council audit visit to NEWI in May 1996, Information and Student Services was again commended for its support for students (HEQC 1996).

All higher education institutions will receive an increase at or above the forecast rate of inflation, with the exception of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies.
