Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) is a British train operating company owned by Sea Containers, which operates high speed train services on the East Coast Main Line.
The initials GNER were almost certainly chosen for their similarity to LNER, the company that operated the route before British Railways was formed.

The British Railways Board (BRB) was created in 1962, taking over from the former British Transport Commission (BTC) which, in addition to the railway, was also responsible for the waterways (canals) and road freight transport.
Also during this time, yellow warning panels, characteristic of British railways, were added to the front of diesel and electric locomotives and multiple units in order to increase the safety of track workers.

Great North Eastern Railway has announced plans to build three new stations near Doncaster, Edinburgh and north London, as part of its bid to the Strategic Rail Authority for a new franchise to run the east coast mainline.
Great North Eastern Railway is asking the government to extend its franchise on the east coast main line from seven to 15 years, and also wants a guarantee that any future operator would be required to run tilting trains in order to reduce its leasing costs on these trains.
Great North Eastern Railway is offering to profit-share with the government in return for the doubling of its seven year franchise in order to justify an investment in eight new trains for its London to Scotland services.

This near-perfect example of a wooden-post North Eastern Railway signal clearly shows the origins of signals where the arm slotted completely within the post when in the "off" position - the timber post is broader at that point so as to fully encompass the arm.
Many later North Eastern signals were mounted on lattice posts, and naturally more of these have survived into recent years.
This example, at Barton Hill, is one of a couple of survivors that are thought to date back to the days of the North Eastern Railway.
