  The Elmham Question
Just north of East Dereham in Norfolk is the 'Saxon Cathedral' site at North Elmham, which was the seat of the Bishops of East Anglia during the late Anglo-Saxon period until Herfast, first Norman Bishop of Elmham, moved to Thetford in 1075.
The central Norfolk countryside around North Elmham was certainly settled early in the Anglo-Saxon period, as the extensive pre-Christian cemetery at nearby Spong Hill indicates.
South Elmham is located in what appears to be an ancient nine-parish block of territory, the Ferding of Elmham, which Norman Scarfe has suggested may represent a seventh-century endowment by the Wuffing kings to the Church.

North Elmham is a village in Norfolk about 8 km (5 miles) north of East Dereham on the west bank of the River Wensum.
Located prominently to the north of the village was the Norfolk County School which on closing in the 1890s was taken over for the Watts Naval School, the birthplace of the actor John Mills.
The earthworks and ruins at North Elmham stewarded by English Heritage are thought to be the remains of Bishop Herbert de Losinge's late eleventh-century episcopal church and the late fourteenth century double-moated castle built on this by Henry le Despenser, Bishop of Norwich.

North Elmlram in Launditch hundred, 5 miles north of East Dereham.
In the Saxon time this was for four centuries (A.D. 673-1075) the seat of a bishopric ; and after the see was removed to Thetford, and subsequently to Norwich, the bishops continued to reside occasionally in the manor-house here, which bishop Spencer, in the time of Richard II, obtained leave to convert into a castle.

) is a village, station on the Great Eastern railway, and parish, 5 miles north from East Dereham and 111 from London, in the Western division of the county, Launditch hundred, Mitford and Launditch union, East Dereham county court district, rural deanery of Brisley and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich.
Bishop Spencer obtained a licence to embattle his manor house at Elmham: some traces of the foundation and intrenchments may still be seen.
Elmham Nawers and North Elmham; Earl Sondes is lord of the former and the Dean and Chapter of Norwich are lords of the latter.

One of its regular customers was Seaman's Grain of North Elmham.
Unfortunately, the loading facility at North Elmham no longer exists, and its site is now a housing estate.
This photo shows the hoppers being loaded up; each one contains as much grain as two or three lorries.
