 Musselshell - An Endangered River
At one time the Musselshell was one of Montana's cold water rivers with cutthroat in the upper reaches and walleye, sauger, channel cats and paddle fish in the lower river.
The North, Middle and South Forks of the Musselshell River start on the National Forests of the Little Belt, Castle and Crazy Mountains of Central Montana and flow 500 miles to the river's confluence with the Missouri River in Fort Peck Reservoir within the Charles Russell Game Refuge.
The Musselshell was one of Montana's cold water rivers with cutthroat trout in the upper reaches and walleye, sauger, channel cats and paddle fish in the lower parts.

The principal tributaries are the Marias and Teton Rivers from the west and north, the Judith River, Musselshell River, and Dry Creek from the south.
Exceptions are the Teton River downstream from Choteau, the Musselshell River downstream from Ryegate, and the Missouri River downstream from Virgelle.

 TRAIL CORRIDOR: Nez Perce National Historic Trail
What followed was the Salmon River raids, in which several young warriors avenged the deaths of tribal members killed by miners and settlers a few years before during white settlement of the Nez Perce homeland.
The beginning of the trail from the vicinity of Wallowa Lake to Dug Bar on the Snake River was not used in its entirety during the 1877 Nez Perce trek.
They stopped at the Big Hole camp on the North Fork of the Big Hole River to rest, gather food, and cut and dry tipi poles for their long trip through the treeless regions of Idaho and Montana.

Segment B is the major access from the Salmon River to Tolo Lake and Tephalewam, and was used by the Nez Perce in 1877.
North of the Missouri old roads, trails, and county roads parallel the Nez Perce's route to the Snake Creek campsite.
Proceeding north across the plains, the trail passes several isolated mountain ranges, winds through the Missouri River Breaks and terminates on the glaciated high plains northeast of the Bear Paw Mountains.

For instance, the Musselshell River (#9) is a tributary of the Missouri and the Powder River (#21) flows into the Yellowstone.

Between Fort Benton and the Judith River confluence are the White Cliffs, considered to be one of the most scenic floats along the entire Missouri River.
Where the Judith River flows into the Missouri is Judith Landing, a stopping post for steam boats before they climbed the final leg to Fort Benton.
Not knowing which fork was the headwaters to the Missouri, one party was dispatched up the Marias, while the main group continued up the main river.

Leaving Judith's River, named for a sweet Virginia lass, the explorers sailed, or were towed, seventeen miles up the river, where they camped at the mouth of a bold, running river to which they gave the name of Slaughter River.

 Montana DEQ Musselshell Mining District
Prospectors located the first copper ore in present-day Montana in the Musselshell district, about 14 miles northeast of White Sulphur Springs on the southern slopes of the Little Belt Mountains.
Ore had to be shipped by mules or freight wagons over the Jamison Trail to Fort Benton, and the resultant high shipping costs slowed the growth of the district.
The Copperopolis mine encompasses 21 patented claims south of the North Fork of the Musselshell River.
