The river flows north 116 miles from Northern Rockingham County to the Town of Front royal where it joins the South Fork Shenandoah to form the Shenandoah River.
As the North Fork cuts through the karst geology of the Shenandoah Valley many bedrock ledges cross the channel perpendicular to the flow of the river.
The North Fork is an ideal river to float by canoe.

The Shenandoah Valley is that portion of the Great Valley of Virginia that is drained by the Shenandoah River and its affluents.
The Shenandoah Valley is bounded on the northwest by North Mountain, the first range of the Allegheny Mountains, and on the southeast by the Blue Ridge, which separates the Valley from the Piedmont region and coastal plain of eastern Virginia.

Shenandoah Valley, VA — A persistent fish kill has severely reduced the adult smallmouth bass and redbreast sunfish population in over 100 miles of the South Fork and Mainstem Shenandoah River.
The lesions on the fish have been associated with natural bacteria found in the river, but the underlying cause appears to be an unidentified stressor, which compromises the fish's resistance and make them susceptible to bacterial infection.
Similar fish kills involving the same species occurred on the South Branch Potomac River (WV) in 2002 and on the North Fork Shenandoah River in 2004.

In the upper Potomac River, scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey laboratory in Leestown, W.Va., are studying smallmouth bass that have both male and female traits.
