Reacting to Wednesday’s announcement that Wellington Rugby has signed North Harbour NPC player Hosea Gear, North Harbour Rugby Chief Executive Noel Coom stated that Gear’s move is likely to be a direct symptom of Super 12 playing opportunities rather than NPC contract values – and certainly not about the attraction of Wellington’s weather.
North Harbour Rugby Union Chairman Laurie Margrain commented: “The NZRU has recognised the unsustainable issue of NPC player payments and through the competition review is introducing positive change in 2006 including a salary cap for NPC teams.
But much work on the details of this is still to be done and in the meantime North Harbour Rugby is left exposed to losing top players seeking the very best chance of securing a Super 12 berth particularly with those franchises at lesser populated centres who have fewer players competing for Super 12 spots.
