North Khorasan is one the three provinces that were created after the division of Khorasan in 2004.
In the 14th century, a flag of independence was hoisted by the Sarbedaran movement in Sabzevar, and in 1468, Khorasan came into the hands of Amir Teimoor Goorkani (Tamerlane) and the city of Herat was declared as capital.
Khorasan was the largest province of Iran until it was divided into three provinces on September 29, 2004.

"The administrative division of Khorasan Province was aimed at the elimination of deprivation, fair distribution of allocated resources, strengthening the infrastructures, and improving people's living standards," Khatami said.
Khatami also noted that unemployment in South Khorasan is higher than the national average, and he ascribed this to urban migration by inhabitants of areas affected by drought.

Tehran, Sept 10, IRNA-Two separate earthquakes measuring 4.2 and 3.7 on Richter scale jolted the cities of Raz and Zarand in the northeastern and southeastern provinces of North Khorasan and Kerman Saturday morning respectively.
Ahmad Khosravi, an expert with the institute, told IRNA the tremor was registered in an area located in North Khorasan border with Turkmenistan in 57.13 degrees longitude and 38.29 degrees latitude.
With a population of over 55,000, the border district of Raz and Jargalan is located 100km north of Bojnourd, provincial capital city of North Khorasan.
